The roll call continues with the lineages of Airavata, Kauravya, and Dhritarashtra. It is notable that some nagas bear names echoing those of men and heroes of the Bharata line — Dhritarashtra, Kauravya; in this way tradition points to a kinship and interweaving of worlds — the serpent world and the human one. Here is a reminder of the unity of all living beings: nagas, though seemingly lowly creatures, have lineages, names, precedence, and glory — just as humans do; and so their slaughter is a genuine evil, not a trifle. Suta again qualifies his words: 'not all of them have been proclaimed' because of their multitude — the measure of the deaths exceeds all counting. Note too that the list is called 'increasing glory' (kīrtivardhana): naming preserves the glory of lineages even in death; thus tradition rescues from total oblivion those whom it could not rescue from the fire. Herein lies the consoling power of scripture: what perished in the flame lives on in the word.
