Here the genealogy is traced back to its source: from Brahma come six sages, from Marichi comes Kashyapa, and from him, together with the thirteen daughters of Daksha, come the gods, the demons, and all beings. The unity of origin is telling: Aditi (mother of the gods) and Diti (mother of the demons) are sisters, daughters of the same Daksha, wives of the same Kashyapa; thus gods and asuras are half-brothers. There is depth here: good and evil in creation spring from a single root and are distinguished not by origin but by the path each has chosen — some hold to dharma, others to adharma. It is telling, too, that Vishnu is named among the twelve Adityas as ‘born last, yet surpassing all’: the Lord, descending into the assembly of gods as Upendra (the younger brother of Indra), appears as one among them, yet in essence is the highest; thus God humbles Himself to the rank of the ‘younger,’ while remaining the Supreme. Note, too, the line of Prahlada: Prahlada himself is a great devotee of Vishnu, though the son of the demon Hiranyakashipu; even within the line of demons a saint is born — for devotion is not bound by birth.
