'There was the grandsire, the sage-god; his son was Prajapati; he had eight sons, the Vasus; of them I shall tell in detail. These are Dhara, Dhruva, Soma, Aha, Anila, Anala, Pratyusha, and Prabhasa — remembered as the eight Vasus. The son of Dhumra is Dhara; Dhruva, versed in the knowledge of Brahman; Chandramas is the son of Manasvini; Shvasana is the son of Shvasa; the son of Rata is Aha; Hutashana is the son of Shandili; and Pratyusha and Prabhasa are the sons of Prabhata. The sons of Dhara are Dravina and Hutahavyavaha; the son of Dhruva is lord Kala (Time), who drives the worlds toward their end. The son of Soma is Varchas, by whom splendor is born; from Manohara come Shishira, Prana, and Ramana. The sons of Aha are remembered as Jyoti, Shrama, Shanta, and also the sage Muni; the son of Agni is the glorious Kumara, who dwells in the reed-thicket. His brothers are Shakha, Vishakha, and Naigamesha, born after him; and because he was reared by the Krittikas, he is remembered as Karttikeya. The wife of Anila is Shiva; and her sons are Purojava and Avijnatagati, the two sons of Anila. The son of Pratyusha is known as the sage named Devala; Devala too has two sons, patient and wise. The sister of Brihaspati is a beautiful maiden, keeping her chastity, having attained yoga, unattached, who wanders through the whole world. And she was the wife of Prabhasa, the eighth Vasu; from her was born the blessed Vishvakarman, the Prajapati of craft — the maker of a thousand crafts, carpenter of the [thirty] gods, creator of all ornaments, the best of craftsmen, who fashioned the wondrous celestial chariots of the gods. By whose craft, the great-souled one, mankind lives, and whom, the imperishable Vishvakarman, people constantly worship.'
