Here is the genealogy of the eight Vasus (the very ones who will incarnate as the sons of Ganga and as Bhishma) and the emergence of Vishvakarman, the divine architect. It is significant that Kumara-Karttikeya (the god of war) and Vishvakarman (the god of craft) are included among the ranks of the gods: tradition honors both martial valor and creative artistry as divine gifts. Here is the sanctification of labor and craftsmanship: Vishvakarman is 'the one by whose craft men live' and whom they worship; thus craft, performed as service, partakes of the divine. Notice too the image of the maiden, the sister of Brihaspati — 'having attained yoga, unattached, wandering': tradition honors the path of renunciation (yoga) equally with the path of family life. Thus this dry list once again opens a depth: behind the names of the Vasus lies the coming drama of Bhishma; behind Vishvakarman, the sanctification of labor; behind Karttikeya, valor; and all of this is part of a single creation, ordered by providence.
