कालवर्षी च पर्जन्यः सस्यानि फलवन्ति च ॥
सर्वरत्नसमृद्धा च मही वसुमती तदा ॥
स चाद्भुतमहावीर्यो वज्रसंहननो युवा ॥
उद्यम्य मन्दरं दोर्भ्यां हरेत् सवनकाननम् ॥
धनुष्य् अथ गदायुद्धे त्सरुप्रहरणेषु च ॥
नागपृष्ठे ऽश्वपृष्ठे च बभूव परिनिष्ठितः ॥
बले विष्णुसमश् चासीत् तेजसा भास्करोपमः ॥
अक्षुब्धत्वे ऽर्णवसमः सहिष्णुत्वे धरासमः ॥
संमतः स महीपालः प्रसन्नपुरराष्ट्रवान् ॥
भूयो धर्मपरैर् भावैर् विदितं जनम् आवसत् ॥

nāgapṛṣṭhe 'śvapṛṣṭhe ca babhūva pariniṣṭhitaḥ ||
bale viṣṇusamaś cāsīt tejasā bhāskaropamaḥ ||
akṣubdhatve 'rṇavasamaḥ sahiṣṇutve dharāsamaḥ ||
saṃmataḥ sa mahīpālaḥ prasannapurarāṣṭravān ||
bhūyo dharmaparair bhāvair viditaṃ janam āvasat ||
"The god of rain poured down moisture in season, the fields were fruitful, and the earth was abundant with all treasures, rich in wealth in that age. He, a king of wondrous great might, youthful, hard of body as diamond, could have lifted with his arms the mountain Mandara with its groves and forests. In combat with the bow, in fighting with the mace, in hand-to-hand contests with weapons, on the back of an elephant and on the back of a horse, he was accomplished to perfection. In strength he was equal to Vishnu, in radiance like the Sun, in imperturbability equal to the ocean, in patience equal to the Earth. That revered king, whose cities and kingdom were content, dwelt in a disposition devoted to dharma among an obedient people."

Here the portrait of Dushyanta — the ideal king uniting might and righteousness — is completed. Notable are the comparisons: "in strength equal to Vishnu, in radiance to the Sun, in imperturbability to the ocean, in patience to the Earth." Here is a catalogue of royal virtues: strength (for protection), splendor (dignity), imperturbability (unshaken by passions), and, above all, patience (kshama, "equal to the Earth"). It is significant that patience is named the highest of his traits: as the Earth bears all things without complaint, so must the king endure much for the good of his subjects. Notice too the link between the king's righteousness and the flourishing of nature: "rain in season, fields fruitful" — again the thought appears that the ruler's dharma is reflected in the harmony of the world (cf. chapter 58). Thus the image of Dushyanta is not mere praise of an ancestor but the manifestation of an ideal from which the Kuru line once began and from which it will fall away (in the person of Duryodhana). With this benevolent king and his meeting with Shakuntala (in the chapters that follow) the glorious lineage of the Bharatas begins.
