एतावद् उक्त्वा वचनं प्रातिष्ठत शकुन्तला ॥
अथान्तरिक्षे दुःषन्तं वाग् उवाचाशरीरिणी ॥
ऋत्विक्पुरोहिताचार्यैर् मन्त्रिभिश् चावृतं तदा ॥
भस्त्रा माता पितुः पुत्रो येन जातः स एव सः ॥
भरस्व पुत्रं दुःषन्त मावमंस्थाः शकुन्तलाम् ॥
रेतोधाः पुत्र उन्नयति नरदेव यमक्षयात् ॥
त्वं चास्य धाता गर्भस्य सत्यम् आह शकुन्तला ॥
जाया जनयते पुत्रम् आत्मनो ऽङ्गं द्विधा कृतम् ॥
तस्माद् भरस्व दुःषन्त पुत्रं शाकुन्तलं नृप ॥
अभूतिर् एषा कस् त्यज्याज् जीवञ् जीवन्तम् आत्मजम् ॥
शाकुन्तलं महात्मानं दौःषन्तिं भर पौरव ॥
भर्तव्यो ऽयं त्वया यस्माद् अस्माकं वचनाद् अपि ॥
तस्माद् भवत्व् अयं नाम्ना भरतो नाम ते सुतः ॥
तच् छ्रुत्वा पौरवो राजा व्याहृतं वै दिवौकसाम् ॥
पुरोहितम् अमात्यांश् च संप्रहृष्टो ऽब्रवीद् इदम् ॥
शृण्वन्त्व् एतद् भवन्तो ऽस्य देवदूतस्य भाषितम् ॥
अहम् अप्य् एवम् एवैनं जानामि स्वयम् आत्मजम् ॥
यद्य् अहं वचनाद् एव गृह्णीयाम् इमम् आत्मजम् ॥
भवेद् धि शङ्का लोकस्य नैवं शुद्धो भवेद् अयम् ॥
तं विशोध्य तदा राजा देवदूतेन भारत ॥
हृष्टः प्रमुदितश् चापि प्रतिजग्राह तं सुतम् ॥

bhartavyo 'yaṃ tvayā yasmād asmākaṃ vacanād api ||
tasmād bhavatv ayaṃ nāmnā bharato nāma te sutaḥ ||
tac chrutvā pauravo rājā vyāhṛtaṃ vai divaukasām ||
purohitam amātyāṃś ca saṃprahṛṣṭo 'bravīd idam ||
śṛṇvantv etad bhavanto 'sya devadūtasya bhāṣitam ||
aham apy evam evainaṃ jānāmi svayam ātmajam ||
yady ahaṃ vacanād eva gṛhṇīyām imam ātmajam ||
bhaved dhi śaṅkā lokasya naivaṃ śuddho bhaved ayam ||
taṃ viśodhya tadā rājā devadūtena bhārata ||

जाया आत्मनः अङ्गं द्विधा कृतं पुत्रं जनयते तस्मात् नृप दुःषन्त शाकुन्तलं पुत्रं भरस्वjāyā ātmanaḥ aṅgaṃ dvidhā kṛtaṃ putraṃ janayate tasmāt nṛpa duḥṣanta śākuntalaṃ putraṃ bharasvaA wife bears a son as a second, divided limb of the husband's own body; therefore, O King Dushyanta, nourish the son born of Shakuntala
पौरव जीवन् जीवन्तं आत्मजं कः त्यज्यात् एषा अभूतिः महात्मानं दौःषन्तिं शाकुन्तलं भरpaurava jīvan jīvantaṃ ātmajaṃ kaḥ tyajyāt eṣā abhūtiḥ mahātmānaṃ dauḥṣantiṃ śākuntalaṃ bharaO Paurava, who among the living would abandon his own living son? Vaishampayana said: “Having said this much, Shakuntala went away; and then, to Dushyanta, surrounded by priests, the purohita, teachers, and counselors, a bodiless voice spoke from the sky: ‘The mother is but a vessel [holding] the father; the son is that very father, by whom he was begotten; O Dushyanta, nourish your son, do not despise Shakuntala. O lord of men, he who gave the seed is the father; the son delivers his ancestors from the abode of Yama; you are the begetter of this fruit; Shakuntala has spoken the truth. A wife bears a son as a second, divided limb of the husband’s own body; therefore, O King Dushyanta, nourish the son born of Shakuntala. O Paurava, who among the living would abandon his own living son? That would be ruin; nourish the great-souled son of Dushyanta and Shakuntala. And since by our word he must be nourished (bhartavya) by you, let your son therefore be named Bharata.’ King Paurava, having heard this utterance of the gods, greatly rejoiced, and said to the purohita and counselors: ‘Hear the words of this heavenly messenger; I myself know him indeed as my own child. If I had accepted this son merely on her word, there would have been doubt among the people, and he would not have been recognized as pure.’”
