Here the genealogy continues, and a stern lesson about ruin through pride makes itself felt. There is a double warning here. First, the fifty sons of Manu "perished through mutual strife" -- already at the very beginning of the line the theme of fratricide sounds, a theme that will reach its height in the war of the Bharatas; discord among kin is an ancient ruin. Second, Pururavas, "intoxicated with might," provokes a quarrel with the brahmins, seizes their treasures, and, refusing Sanatkumara's counsel, perishes by a curse. A stern law is shown here: insulting brahmins -- seizing a brahmin's property -- and the pride of power bring swift ruin; even a great king, drunk on his own strength and deaf to instruction, perishes. It is telling that neither fame nor dominion over the islands can save him: before a sin against what is sacred, worldly greatness is powerless. Scripture thus quietly teaches that power without humility and reverence for what is spiritual is a road to ruin; and a line that began with strife and pride is destined to pass through many trials of dharma.
