Here Shukra proclaims the great teaching of freedom from anger (akrodha) and forbearance (kshama) — one of the epic's central moral teachings. The images are telling: the one who masters anger is the "true charioteer" (not one who merely holds the reins, but one who guides the horse); the one who casts off anger through patience is like a serpent shedding its worn-out skin — renewed, set free. Here is the highest praise of self-restraint: "the one free from anger is greater" than one who performs sacrifices for a hundred years, for mastering anger is harder and more precious than ritual. Telling too is the definition of a "true man" (purusha): not one who is strong in vengeance, but one who, "though tormented, does not torment in return"; true manliness lies in forbearance, not retaliation. And anger (krodha) is known as one of the soul's worst enemies, together with lust and greed, a gate to hell (cf. the Gita); victory over it is victory over the world ("by that, all is conquered"). Thus Shukra, comforting his daughter, instructs her in the highest dharma: not to answer evil with evil, not to become like the thoughtless in their enmity.
