Here Yayāti defends himself, but is nonetheless punished — and the subtlety of dharma concerning duty and given word shows itself. Yayāti's defense is telling: 'to withhold offspring from a woman begging in her season is a sin equal to killing an embryo'; and in this there is truth — the duty to continue the line is sacred. But Śukra points to another truth: 'you should have asked me; false conduct in dharma is theft.' Here lies a profound lesson: one can be right by one rule (the duty of offspring) and guilty by another (breaking a given word and concealment); dharma is not a single rule but their harmony. Yayāti's sin lies not in giving offspring, but in doing so in secret, transgressing a prohibition and not asking Śukra: mithyācāra (false conduct) is theft. Telling, too, is the appearance of old age — and its transference: Yayāti, 'not sated with youth,' seeks to prolong pleasure — and thereby prepares the central lesson (in the chapters to come) about the insatiability of kāma. Here we see both Śukra's grace (the possibility of transferring old age) and, more deeply, an image of how a person, fearing old age and death, clings to pleasure; whereas wisdom lies in accepting old age and turning to the Highest. Thus the curse becomes a door to insight.
