Here stands a pivotal moment: the birth of Kuru, from whom comes the name of the line (Kuru, the Kauravas) and the name of the field of the great battle (Kurukshetra). Notable is the fall and restoration of Samvarana: the king, having lost his kingdom to pestilence and the Panchala invasion, flees and wanders for a long time; but, having gained the protection of the sage Vasishtha (making him his purohita), he regains the kingdom. Here is a profound lesson: a king's strength lies not only in his army (which was defeated), but in spiritual guidance (the sage-purohita); without a brahmin's blessing a kingdom cannot stand, but with it, it rises again. Thus the scripture shows the union of kshatra and brahma as the foundation of prosperity: the king protects, the sage blesses and guides. It is also significant that Kurukshetra is 'made holy by the austerity' of King Kuru: the field of the coming fratricidal battle is holy from the start (a dharma-kshetra, as the Gita will later call it); so the greatest violence will take place on the holiest ground — a bitter paradox that the epic itself will unfold. With this birth of Kuru, the genealogy arrives at its center — the line whose name the entire drama bears.
