Here begins the tale of Dirghatamas — born blind by a curse. It is telling that even Brihaspati, the preceptor of the gods, could fall: overpowered by desire, he could not master himself and forced himself upon his unwilling brother's wife. Here is the fearsome power of kama: if even the guru of the celestials proved subject to it, how watchful must everyone else be; passion spares neither knowledge nor rank, and only the Lord's grace and devotion to Him preserve one from falling. Notable, too, is the curse uttered in anger upon one not yet born: even a sage, having sinned through passion, goes on to sin through anger — one weakness leads to another. Here it becomes clear that anger is the companion of desire; whoever has not mastered desire will not master fury either, when desire is thwarted. And a wondrous thing is notable: the child in the womb already knows the Vedas and speaks — an image showing that the soul is not the body, that knowledge and consciousness belong to the living being even before birth; in the new body, what was accumulated before comes to manifest. Thus scripture reveals both the danger of passion even for the great, and the truth of the eternal soul, carrying its knowledge from life to life.
