निशम्य वचनं भर्तुर् वनवासे धृतात्मनः ॥
तत्समं वचनं कुन्ती माद्री च समभाषताम् ॥
अन्ये ऽपि ह्य् आश्रमाः सन्ति ये शक्या भरतर्षभ ॥
आवाभ्यां धर्मपत्नीभ्यां सह तप्त्वा तपो महत् ॥
त्वम् एव भविता सार्थः स्वर्गस्यापि न संशयः ॥
प्रणिधायेन्द्रियग्रामं भर्तृलोकपरायणे ॥
त्यक्तकामसुखे ह्य् आवां तप्स्यावो विपुलं तपः ॥
यदि आवां महाप्राज्ञ त्यक्ष्यसि त्वं विशां पते ॥
अद्यैवावां प्रहास्यावो जीतिवं नात्र संशयः ॥

yadi āvāṃ mahāprājña tyakṣyasi tvaṃ viśāṃ pate ||
adyaivāvāṃ prahāsyāvo jītivaṃ nātra saṃśayaḥ ||
Having heard the words of her husband, who had resolved on life in the forest, Kunti and Mādrī spoke words in accord with his: "There are indeed other paths of life open to us, O bull of the Bharatas -- we, your two lawful wives, may together with you perform great austerity; you alone will be our means of attaining even heaven, there is no doubt of it. Restraining the multitude of the senses, devoted to our husband's world, having abandoned the pleasures of desire, we shall perform vast austerity. But if you, O most wise one, O lord of the people, abandon us, this very day we shall part with our lives -- of that there is no doubt."

Here Kunti and Mādrī show a model of conjugal faithfulness and spiritual resolve. It is significant that they do not try to dissuade their husband from his austerity, nor cling to the comforts of the palace, but ask to share his renunciation with him: a true wife follows her husband onto the path of asceticism as well. Here is the height of a devoted wife's calling (pativratā): "you will be our means of attaining even heaven" -- the wife honors her husband as the way to the highest good, and union with him is dearer to her than every comfort. Their condition is telling: death is better than separation -- a love for which life without the beloved holds no meaning. It is significant, too, that they are ready to "restrain the senses and abandon the pleasures of desire": their love is not carnal attachment but spiritual companionship. Thus the scripture reveals an ideal of marriage in which the wife is not an obstacle to austerity but a fellow practitioner; and in this shines a reflection of the highest devotion, in which the soul longs only for union with the one it loves.
