वैशंपायन उवाच
इत्य् एवम् उक्त्वा भार्ये ते राजा कौरववंशजः ॥
ततश् चूडामणिं निष्कम् अङ्गदे कुण्डलानि च ॥
वासांसि च महार्हाणि स्त्रीणाम् आभरणानि च ॥
प्रदाय सर्वं विप्रेभ्यः पाण्डुः पुनर् अभाषत ॥
गत्वा नागपुरं वाच्यं पाण्डुः प्रव्रजितो वनम् ॥
अर्थं कामं सुखं चैव रतिं च परमात्मिकाम् ॥
प्रतस्थे सर्वम् उत्सृज्य सभार्यः कुरुपुंगवः ॥

ity evam uktvā bhārye te rājā kauravavaṃśajaḥ ||
tataś cūḍāmaṇiṃ niṣkam aṅgade kuṇḍalāni ca ||
vāsāṃsi ca mahārhāṇi strīṇām ābharaṇāni ca ||
pradāya sarvaṃ viprebhyaḥ pāṇḍuḥ punar abhāṣata ||
gatvā nāgapuraṃ vācyaṃ pāṇḍuḥ pravrajito vanam ||
arthaṃ kāmaṃ sukhaṃ caiva ratiṃ ca paramātmikām ||
pratasthe sarvam utsṛjya sabhāryaḥ kurupuṃgavaḥ ||
"Having spoken thus to his two wives, the king, born of the Kuru line, then gave to the brahmins everything -- the crest-jewel, the golden neck-ornament, the armlets and earrings, the costly garments, and the women's ornaments -- and spoke again: 'Having come to Hastināpura, it must be announced: Pāṇḍu has gone forth to the forest.' And, abandoning everything -- wealth, desire, happiness, and the highest delight -- the bull of the Kuru line set out on his way with both his wives."

Here Pāṇḍu confirms his renunciation in deed, giving away all his possessions to the brahmins. It is significant that he does not simply leave his wealth behind but distributes it -- and to the most worthy: renunciation is completed by giving (dāna). Here is the right way of leaving the world: not to abandon one's goods in neglect, but to turn them to good use by offering them to brahmins. Significant, too, is the list of what is left behind -- "artha, kāma, worldly happiness, and the highest delight": Pāṇḍu renounces the very aims of worldly life, not merely its things. Thus the scripture reveals the fullness of renunciation: both the treasures and the very aspirations for whose sake they are amassed are left behind; and the king, who but lately conquered the earth, departs as a penniless ascetic. In this voluntary poverty of the king lies a lesson on the vanity of all he had won.
