ब्राह्मणाः क्षत्रिया वैश्याः शूद्राश् चैव सहस्रशः ॥
रुदन्तः शोकसंतप्ता अनुजग्मुर् नराधिपम् ॥
अयम् अस्मान् अपाहाय दुःखे चाधाय शाश्वते ॥
कृत्वानाथान् परो नाथः क्व यास्यति नराधिपः ॥
क्रोशन्तः पाण्डवाः सर्वे भीष्मो विदुर एव च ॥
रमणीये वनोद्देशे गङ्गातीरे समे शुभे ॥
न्यासयाम् आसुर् अथ तां शिबिकां सत्यवादिनः ॥
सभार्यस्य नृसिंहस्य पाण्डोर् अक्लिष्टकर्मणः ॥

ramaṇīye vanoddeśe gaṅgātīre same śubhe ||
nyāsayām āsur atha tāṃ śibikāṃ satyavādinaḥ ||
sabhāryasya nṛsiṃhasya pāṇḍor akliṣṭakarmaṇaḥ ||
"Brahmins, kshatriyas, vaishyas, and shudras by the thousands, weeping, scorched by grief, followed after the sovereign: 'He, having left us and cast us into everlasting sorrow, having made us defenseless, the supreme protector — where does the sovereign go?' Wailing, all the Pandavas, Bhishma, and Vidura set down that palanquin — the lion among men, Pandu, with his wife — in a lovely woodland spot, on the level, auspicious bank of the Ganges."

Here the love of the whole people for Pandu shows itself. Telling is that all the classes weep alike, calling him "the supreme protector" (paro nathah): the measure of a good king is that the people mourn him as their own guardian, not as a distant lord. In this is the fruit of righteous rule: he who shepherded his subjects as a father is mourned as a father. Telling too is the place of rest — the bank of the Ganga, the holiest of rivers: even the last rite is performed by the sacred waters, so that the soul may attain purification. Thus scripture, by the measure of the people's grief, testifies to Pandu's righteousness: truly great is that king whose death is a sorrow for all, from brahmin to shudra.
