ततस् तस्य शरीरं तत् सर्वगन्धनिषेवितम् ॥
शुचिकालीयकादिग्धं मुख्यस्नानाधिवासितम् ॥
पर्यषिञ्चज् जलेनाशु शातकुम्भमयैर् घटैः ॥
चन्दनेन च मुख्येन शुक्लेन समलेपयन् ॥
कालागुरुविमिश्रेण तथा तुङ्गरसेन च ॥
अथैनं देशजैः शुक्लैर् वासोभिः समयोजयन् ॥
आच्छन्नः स तु वासोभिर् जीवन्न् इव नरर्षभः ॥
शुशुभे पुरुषव्याघ्रो महार्हशयनोचितः ॥
tatas tasya śarīraṃ tat sarvagandhaniṣevitam ||
śucikālīyakādigdhaṃ mukhyasnānādhivāsitam ||
paryaṣiñcaj jalenāśu śātakumbhamayair ghaṭaiḥ ||
candanena ca mukhyena śuklena samalepayan ||
kālāguruvimiśreṇa tathā tuṅgarasena ca ||
athainaṃ deśajaiḥ śuklair vāsobhiḥ samayojayan ||
ācchannaḥ sa tu vāsobhir jīvann iva nararṣabhaḥ ||
śuśubhe puruṣavyāghro mahārhaśayanocitaḥ ||
"Then that body of his, anointed with all fragrances, rubbed with pure aloe, fragrant after the chief bathing, they at once sprinkled with water from golden vessels and anointed with the finest white sandalwood, mixed with black aloe and tunga-resin; then they clothed him in white homespun garments. And covered with garments, that bull among men, as if alive, shone, the tiger among men, as though resting upon a precious couch."

Here Pandu's body is arrayed with care and reverence. Telling is that the departed "shone as if alive, as though resting on a precious couch": the death of the righteous is not unsightly but majestic; his radiant face and adorned body show peace, not decay. And in death the righteousness lived is reflected: the face of a pure soul retains its splendor. Telling too are the abundance of fragrances and the whiteness of the garments — an image of the purity with which the good are sent off. Thus scripture shows the beauty of a worthy funeral: the body of the righteous is honored as a treasure before it is committed to the purifying fire.
