Here Hidimba's love shows itself in readiness to serve. It is telling that she asks to be accepted, promising in return not pleasure but service: to carry them across dangers, to bear them through perils, to appear at the mere thought of her. True love is service (seva): it seeks not to be served but to serve the beloved. Telling too is that her gifts are offered to the whole family, not to Bhima alone: she wishes to be of use to all the righteous. Thus the scripture shows that devotion is proven by deed -- and Hidimba earns the right to love through readiness for selfless service.
