"Stand at a distance, do not come near me! Why do you not recognize me, you who have reached the water of Bhagirathi? Know me as the gandharva Angaraparna, one who relies on his own strength; for I am proud and jealous, and the beloved friend of Kubera. And this wondrous forest, called Angaraparna, along the Ganga and the Vaka, is mine, where I dwell; neither the unclean, nor beasts, nor gods, nor humans approach it -- so why do you approach?"

Here the gandharva displays the full measure of his vanity. It is telling how he exalts himself -- by name, by strength, by friendship with Kubera, by the sanctity of his forest: pride loves to enumerate the props of its own arrogance. Here it becomes clear that one who boasts of strength and connections displays not power but vanity. Thus the text portrays an arrogant man intoxicated with himself; and the louder his boasting, the nearer his fall.
