'The vidya that I gathered here long ago through austerity, I will now impart to the great-souled giver of life. For one who reunites with life an enemy who has been defeated, bound, and has come for refuge — what blessing does he not deserve? This vidya, named Chakshushi, which Manu gave to Soma, Soma gave to Vishvavasu, and Vishvavasu gave to me; given by a guru, it perishes in the hands of a coward. Its lineage I have told you; now learn from me its power.'

Here gratitude answers mercy with the gift of knowledge. It is telling that the gandharva, until now an enemy, hastens to reward the 'giver of life': the one who was spared repays his savior with the most precious thing he has. Telling, too, is the condition placed on the vidya: given to a coward, it perishes — sacred knowledge demands a worthy bearer. Here it is revealed that even the transmission of knowledge is subject to adhikara [qualification]: the vidya retains its power only in one who is worthy of it. Thus scripture shows gratitude turning enmity into a gift; and the knowledge passes to one who is worthy — to Arjuna, who spared his enemy.
