यच् चक्षुषा द्रष्टुम् इच्छेत् त्रिषु लोकेषु किं चन ॥
तत् पश्येद् यादृशं चेच्छेत् तादृषं द्रष्टुम् अर्हति ॥
समानपद्ये षण्मासान् स्थितो विद्यां लभेद् इमाम् ॥
अनुनेष्याम्य् अहं विद्यां स्वयं तुभ्यं व्रते कृते ॥
विद्यया ह्य् अनया राजन् वयं नृभ्यो विशेषिताः ॥
अविशिष्टाश् च देवानाम् अनुभावप्रवर्तिताः ॥
yac cakṣuṣā draṣṭum icchet triṣu lokeṣu kiṃ cana ||
tat paśyed yādṛśaṃ cecchet tādṛṣaṃ draṣṭum arhati ||
samānapadye ṣaṇmāsān sthito vidyāṃ labhed imām ||
anuneṣyāmy ahaṃ vidyāṃ svayaṃ tubhyaṃ vrate kṛte ||
vidyayā hy anayā rājan vayaṃ nṛbhyo viśeṣitāḥ ||
aviśiṣṭāś ca devānām anubhāvapravartitāḥ ||
'Whatever you wish to see with the inner eye in the three worlds, you will see, and in whatever form you wish, in that form you will be able to behold it. Remaining in austerity for six months, a person obtains this vidya; I myself will impart it to you when your vow has been fulfilled. For by this vidya, O king, we are distinguished from men and not distinguished from the gods, moved by its power.'

Here the power of hidden knowledge — clairvoyance — is revealed. It is telling that even this is not given freely but through austerity: 'remaining six months' — even what is bestowed by a guru requires effort from the one who receives it. Here it is seen that spiritual powers are the fruit of discipline, not of desire alone. Telling, too, is what distinguishes gandharvas from men — not the body, but knowledge: worth is measured by understanding. Thus scripture shows that hidden knowledge exalts its possessor; but its attainment is subject to vow and effort.
