मर्तुं न शक्यम् इत्य् उक्त्वा पुनर् एवाश्रमं ययौ ॥

Here the saint acknowledges the futility of his intent. Telling is his own word: "it is not possible to die" -- he accepts what all his attempts had resisted: death is not within man's power. Here begins a submission before the will of providence: his efforts exhausted, the righteous man yields to the inevitable and returns to life. Thus the scripture shows the turn from despair to acceptance; and Vasishtha, unable to die, turns back -- toward the hermitage, toward duty, toward life.
