वैशंपायन उवाच
ततस् ते नरशार्दूला भ्रातरः पञ्च पाण्डवाः ॥
प्रययुर् द्रौपदीं द्रष्टुं तं च देवमहोत्सवम् ॥
ते प्रयाता नरव्याघ्रा मात्रा सह परंतपाः ॥
ब्राह्मणान् ददृशुर् मार्गे गच्छतः सगणान् बहून् ॥
तान् ऊचुर् ब्राह्मणा राजन् पाण्डवान् ब्रह्मचारिणः ॥
क्व भवन्तो गमिष्यन्ति कुतो वागच्छतेति ह ॥
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
tatas te naraśārdūlā bhrātaraḥ pañca pāṇḍavāḥ ||
prayayur draupadīṃ draṣṭuṃ taṃ ca devamahotsavam ||
te prayātā naravyāghrā mātrā saha paraṃtapāḥ ||
brāhmaṇān dadṛśur mārge gacchataḥ sagaṇān bahūn ||
tān ūcur brāhmaṇā rājan pāṇḍavān brahmacāriṇaḥ ||
kva bhavanto gamiṣyanti kuto vāgacchateti ha ||
Vaishampayana said: "Then those tigers among men, the five Pandava brothers, set out with their mother to see Draupadi and that great divine festival. As they went, those tigers among men, scorchers of foes, saw on the road brahmins going in many groups; and those brahmins said to the Pandavas, who walked as celibate students: 'Where will you go? Or where do you come from?'"

Here the hidden princes walk toward their destiny in the guise of celibate students. It is telling that the Pandavas, setting out toward a decisive turn, mingle with a crowd of wandering brahmins: greatness ripens unnoticed, under the cover of humility. Providence is seen here leading the chosen ones in secret, amid the ordinary: concealed, they are already on the road to Draupadi. So the scripture shows the beginning of an ascent masked as poor wanderers; and the meeting with brahmins on the road is the first step toward the svayamvara.
