Here a mother vouches for safety by what she has witnessed. It is telling that Jarita relies on what she saw with her own eyes: she is sincerely convinced of the safety of the hole. Thus it is revealed that even good intent does not always see the whole danger. So the scripture shows the mother's insistence; but the children will find a flaw in her reasoning.
