अप्रमादेन सुहृदाम् अन्येषां च महात्मनाम् ॥

Duryodhana readily seizes upon the promise of victory -- as long as victory comes. It is notable that he does not ask whether the path is honest, only whether it works: the goal has blinded him to the point that the means no longer matter. The verse teaches that passion, once it takes hold of the mind, dissolves the question of righteousness: it is enough for the craving man to know that what he desires is attainable, and he will not consider at what price. And in this haste lies the root of his fall: whoever, on the way to a goal, stops asking 'is it permitted?' has already left the path of dharma. A worthy person weighs not only whether something can be done, but whether it should be done; whoever forgets the second question has given himself over to the first evil counselor.
