बाह्लिकेन रथं दत्तम् आस्थाय परवीरहा ॥

राजश्रिया दीप्यमानो ययौ ब्रह्मपुरःसरः ॥
धृतराष्ट्रेण चाहूतः कालस्य समयेन च ॥

amṛṣyamāṇas tat pārthaḥ samāhvānam ariṃdamaḥ ||
bāhlikena rathaṃ dattam āsthāya paravīrahā ||
paricchanno yayau pārtho bhrātṛbhiḥ saha pāṇḍavaḥ ||
rājaśriyā dīpyamāno yayau brahmapuraḥsaraḥ ||
dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa cāhūtaḥ kālasya samayena ca ||
So having spoken, King Yudhishthira, the tamer of foes, who did not approve of that challenge, set out with Kshattri [Vidura]. Mounting the chariot given by Bahlika, Partha, the slayer of enemy heroes, set out with his retinue and brothers, the Pandava. Blazing with royal splendor, he set out with brahmins at the fore—summoned by Dhritarashtra and by the appointment of time.

'Who did not approve of that challenge'—Yudhishthira goes against his own judgment, drawn by 'the appointment of time.' The combination is telling: he blazes with royal splendor, with brahmins at the fore—an outwardly solemn procession, yet inwardly a march toward calamity. The verse teaches that splendor does not annul fate: a magnificent procession can still lead to a fall. And 'summoned by Dhritarashtra and by the appointment of time' joins two calls together: the call of a man and the call of the hour. The righteous man goes, honoring both, though his heart is a stranger to the game. Thus is shown submission to dharma carried to the end: he does not shrink from what he holds to be right, even knowing where it leads; and his greatness lies not in the outcome but in his fidelity along the way to it.
