स हास्तिनपुरं गत्वा धृतराष्ट्रगृहं ययौ ॥
समियाय च धर्मात्मा धृतराष्ट्रेण पाण्डवः ॥
तथा द्रोणेन भीष्मेण कर्णेन च कृपेण च ॥
समियाय यथान्यायं द्रौणिना च विभुः सह ॥
समेत्य च महाबाहुः सोमदत्तेन चैव ह ॥
दुर्योधनेन शल्येन सौबलेन च वीर्यवान् ॥
ये चान्ये तत्र राजानः पूर्वम् एव समागताः ॥
जयद्रथेन च तथा कुरुभिश् चापि सर्वशः ॥
sa hāstinapuraṃ gatvā dhṛtarāṣṭragṛhaṃ yayau ||
samiyāya ca dharmātmā dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa pāṇḍavaḥ ||
tathā droṇena bhīṣmeṇa karṇena ca kṛpeṇa ca ||
samiyāya yathānyāyaṃ drauṇinā ca vibhuḥ saha ||
sametya ca mahābāhuḥ somadattena caiva ha ||
duryodhanena śalyena saubalena ca vīryavān ||
ye cānye tatra rājānaḥ pūrvam eva samāgatāḥ ||
jayadrathena ca tathā kurubhiś cāpi sarvaśaḥ ||
Arriving at Hastinapura, he went to the house of Dhritarashtra; and the righteous Pandava met with Dhritarashtra. Likewise, as is proper, the lord met with Drona, Bhishma, Karna, Kripa, and with the son of Drona [Ashvatthaman]. And, meeting, the mighty-armed and valiant one [Yudhishthira] came together with Somadatta, Duryodhana, Shalya, and Saubala [Shakuni], with the other kings who had already gathered before, with Jayadratha, and with all the Kurus everywhere.

Yudhishthira greets each one 'as is proper'—even those who are plotting his ruin. It is telling that the righteous man does not divide those he meets into ones worthy and unworthy of greeting: he honors rank and kinship without regard to hidden designs. The verse teaches that the courtesy of dharma is constant, independent of another's disposition: to render what is due to everyone is a duty, even when the one receiving it is scheming evil. And this even-handed honor shown to all, from Bhishma to Shakuni, throws into relief the treachery of those receiving him: the more blameless the guest, the blacker the betrayal being prepared for him. The righteousness of the one who greets does not infect the wicked, but it will expose him fully at the judgment to come.
