ततो हर्षः समभवत् कौरवाणां विशां पते ॥
तान् दृष्ट्वा पुरुषव्याघ्रान् पाण्डवान् प्रियदर्शनान् ॥
विविशुस् ते ऽभ्यनुज्ञाता रत्नवन्ति गृहाण्य् अथ ॥
ददृशुश् चोपयातास् तान् द्रौपदीप्रमुखाः स्त्रियः ॥
याज्ञसेन्याः पराम् ऋद्धिं दृष्ट्वा प्रज्वलिताम् इव ॥
स्नुषास् ता धृतराष्ट्रस्य नातिप्रमनसो ऽभवन् ॥
tato harṣaḥ samabhavat kauravāṇāṃ viśāṃ pate ||
tān dṛṣṭvā puruṣavyāghrān pāṇḍavān priyadarśanān ||
viviśus te 'bhyanujñātā ratnavanti gṛhāṇy atha ||
dadṛśuś copayātās tān draupadīpramukhāḥ striyaḥ ||
yājñasenyāḥ parām ṛddhiṃ dṛṣṭvā prajvalitām iva ||
snuṣās tā dhṛtarāṣṭrasya nātipramanaso 'bhavan ||
Then joy arose among the Kauravas, O lord of the people, at the sight of those tiger-men, the Pandavas, pleasing to behold. With leave granted, they entered the jewel-filled dwellings; and, arriving, their wives, headed by Draupadi, beheld them. Beholding the supreme splendor of Yajnaseni, as though blazing, those daughters-in-law of Dhritarashtra became not very joyful [were overshadowed by envy].

The envy that consumed Duryodhana echoes even in Dhritarashtra's daughters-in-law: Draupadi's splendor overshadows them. It is telling how the affliction spreads through the household like a contagion: where the head is possessed by envy, the household too becomes infected by it. The verse teaches that the passions of those who rule flow down into those under them: the ill disposition of a sovereign or a master breeds its like in those around him. And the brilliance of Yajnaseni, which delights the pure, breeds despondency in the envious -- the same sight that gladdens some wounds others. Thus it shows how far the shadow of envy extends: it holds not one person captive but poisons an entire community, preparing it to share in the evil to come.
