न अतिकृष्णा न रोहिणीna atikṛṣṇā na rohiṇīnot too dark-skinned, not [red, like] Rohini,
सराग-रक्त-नेत्रा चsarāga-rakta-netrā cawith eyes touched by passionate redness,
तया दीव्याम्य् अहं त्वयाtayā dīvyāmy ahaṃ tvayāwith her I play with you;
शारद-उत्पल-पत्र-अक्ष्याśārada-utpala-patra-akṣyāwith eyes [like] petals of the autumn lotus,
शारद-उत्पल-गन्धयाśārada-utpala-gandhayāwith the fragrance of the autumn lotus,
रूपेण श्री-समानयाrūpeṇa śrī-samānayāequal in beauty to Shri;

Shakuni parades Draupadi's virtues as a stake — her beauty, her gentleness, her good character, the devotion of a mistress of the house who lies down last and rises first, caring for everyone. It is telling that the very virtues of a noble wife, worthy of reverence, are turned into a list of merchandise: in praising her, he is selling her. The verse teaches how deeply falsehood can defile: it praises what is holy in order to sell it, turning an object of honor into an object of pawn. And the description of her selfless service — lying down last, rising first — only deepens the horror: the one who cared for everyone is staked like a thing. Here the depths of degradation reveal themselves; but the lower a person is cast down in the eyes of those who trample them, the higher the Lord raises them — and the one degraded will become the one before whom Krishna Himself bows.
