धृतराष्ट्रस् तु संहृष्टः पर्यपृच्छत् पुनः पुनः ॥

सौबलस् त्व् अविचार्यैव जितकाशी मदोत्कटः ॥
जितम् इत्य् एव तान् अक्षान् पुनर् एवान्वपद्यत ॥

kiṃ jitaṃ kiṃ jitam iti hy ākāraṃ nābhyarakṣata ||
jaharṣa karṇo 'tibhṛśaṃ saha duḥśāsanādibhiḥ ||
itareṣāṃ tu sabhyānāṃ netrebhyaḥ prāpataj jalam ||
saubalas tv avicāryaiva jitakāśī madotkaṭaḥ ||
jitam ity eva tān akṣān punar evānvapadyata ||
And Dhritarashtra, exultant, asked again and again: "Is it won? Is it won?" — and did not hide his joy. Karna rejoiced exceedingly, together with Duhshasana and the rest; but from the eyes of other members of the assembly tears streamed forth. And Saubala [Shakuni], without any hesitation at all, triumphant, flushed with the intoxication of victory, took up those dice once more: "Won!"

In this fateful moment the last mask falls away: Dhritarashtra, unconcealed, exults — "is it won?" It is telling that in the hour of the crime, hearts are laid bare: the joy of the blind father, the delight of Karna and Duhshasana, the tears of the rest — the assembly divides into those who rejoice at the evil and those who weep over it. The verse teaches that a great transgression is the touchstone of souls: it reveals who is glad of what. And Dhritarashtra's failure to "guard his expression" means that all his former exhortations and feigned indecision fall away — this is what he truly desired. Thus judgment is passed before judgment: in the light of the evil that has been done, each one stands revealed as he truly is. Whoever rejoices at degradation has pronounced sentence upon himself; whoever weeps over it helplessly is a witness, but not a savior.
