अर्जुन उवाच
न पुरा भीमसेन त्वम् ईदृशीर् वदिता गिरः ॥
परैस् ते नाशितं नूनं नृशंसैर् धर्मगौरवम् ॥
न सकामाः परे कार्या धर्मम् एवाचरोत्तमम् ॥
भ्रातरं धार्मिकं ज्येष्ठं नातिक्रमितुम् अर्हति ॥
आहूतो हि परै राजा क्षात्रधर्मम् अनुस्मरन् ॥
दीव्यते परकामेन तन् नः कीर्तिकरं महत् ॥
भीमसेन उवाच
एवम् अस्मिकृतं विद्यां यद्य् अस्याहं धनंजय ॥
दीप्ते ऽग्नौ सहितौ बाहू निर्दहेयं बलाद् इव ॥

parais te nāśitaṃ nūnaṃ nṛśaṃsair dharmagauravam ||
na sakāmāḥ pare kāryā dharmam evācarottamam ||
bhrātaraṃ dhārmikaṃ jyeṣṭhaṃ nātikramitum arhati ||
āhūto hi parai rājā kṣātradharmam anusmaran ||
dīvyate parakāmena tan naḥ kīrtikaraṃ mahat ||
bhīmasena uvāca
evam asmikṛtaṃ vidyāṃ yady asyāhaṃ dhanaṃjaya ||
dīpte 'gnau sahitau bāhū nirdaheyaṃ balād iva ||
[Arjuna:] "Never before, Bhimasena, have you spoken such words; surely the cruel enemy has destroyed in you the reverence for dharma. One must not let the enemy achieve their desire — practice only the highest dharma; it is not fitting to transgress against a righteous elder brother. The king, summoned by the enemy and mindful of the kshatriya's law, played at another's will — this brings us great glory. But had I held this to be his fault, O Conqueror of Wealth, I myself would have burned my arms in a blazing fire."

Where Bhima blazes, Arjuna cools — and in this concord of two angers the fullness of dharma is revealed: righteous indignation and reverent restraint do not contradict each other but complete one another. Arjuna does not deny the wrong, but he does not let it be turned into discord among brothers, which is exactly what the enemy wished. The word about "glory" is significant: a king faithful to the kshatriya's duty even to his own ruin is not disgraced but glorified — for honor lies not in the outcome, but in fidelity. The verse teaches to preserve unity where the enemy sows discord, and not to lay blame on a brother for what he accepted out of faithfulness to the law.
