ततो दुःशासनः श्रान्तो व्रीडितः समुपाविशत् ॥
धिक्शब्दस् तु ततस् तत्र समभूल् लोमहर्षणः ॥
सभ्यानां नरदेवानां दृष्ट्वा कुन्तीसुतांस् तदा ॥
न विब्रुवन्ति कौरव्याः प्रश्नम् एतम् इति स्म ह ॥
स जनः क्रोशति स्मात्र धृतराष्ट्रं विगर्हयन् ॥

tato duḥśāsanaḥ śrānto vrīḍitaḥ samupāviśat ||
dhikśabdas tu tatas tatra samabhūl lomaharṣaṇaḥ ||
sabhyānāṃ naradevānāṃ dṛṣṭvā kuntīsutāṃs tadā ||
na vibruvanti kauravyāḥ praśnam etam iti sma ha ||
sa janaḥ krośati smātra dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ vigarhayan ||
When the heap of garments had piled up in the midst of the assembly, Duhshasana, exhausted and ashamed, sat down. And then there arose a cry of "shame!", raising the hair on end, among all the lords seated in the assembly, at the sight of the sons of Kunti. "The Kauravas do not resolve this question!" — so the crowd cried out, censuring Dhritarashtra.

The persecutor sits down exhausted and disgraced: evil, having exhausted all its strength, does not reach its goal — for even tireless malice is powerless against unseen protection. The heap of garments is a visible monument to the futility of lawlessness and to the inexhaustibility of the divine covering. It is telling that the crowd, as long as the miracle lasted, kept silent, and only now cries out "shame": conscience awakens once fear has passed, but this belated word no longer redeems the silence of the hour of need. The verse teaches that evil exhausts and shames itself; and that a reproach not spoken in time remains a reproach against the one reproaching as well — the assembly, which failed to resolve the question.
