‘Attachment is held to be the root of the suffering of the mind: from attachment a being clings and comes into union with pain. From attachment are born sufferings, fears, grief, delight, and weariness. From it arises the passion of the senses toward objects, and this is unwholesome; the first of these evils is held to be the graver. As fire in a hollow burns a tree down to its root, so even a small fault of attachment destroys one who seeks dharma. But he who sees the flaw in union and, at parting, does not cling, comes to dispassion, free of enmity and possessiveness. Therefore attachment to one's own people, to friends, to wealth, and even to the body should be removed through knowledge. In those who are endowed with knowledge, who know the scriptures, and who are self-controlled, attachment does not linger, like water on the leaves of a lotus.’

Shaunaka speaks not of coldness of heart but of freedom from clinging. Love is purified when it ceases to demand possession. Such dispassion does not make a person indifferent: it frees him for service without fear of loss.
