मैत्रेय उवाच
शमं यास्यति चेत् पुत्रस् तव राजन् यथा तथा ॥
शापो न भविता तात विपरीते भविष्यति ॥
वैशंपायन उवाच
स विलक्षस् तु राजेन्द्र दुर्योधनपिता तदा ॥
मैत्रेयं प्राह किर्मीरः कथं भीमेन पातितः ॥
मैत्रेय उवाच
नाहं वक्ष्याम्य् असूया ते न ते शुश्रूषते सुतः ॥
एष ते विदुरः सर्वम् आख्यास्यति गते मयि ॥
वैशंपायन उवाच
इत्य् एवम् उक्त्वा मैत्रेयः प्रातिष्ठत यथागतम् ॥
किर्मीरवधसंविग्नो बहिर् दुर्योधनो ऽगमत् ॥
maitreya uvāca
śamaṃ yāsyati cet putras tava rājan yathā tathā ||
śāpo na bhavitā tāta viparīte bhaviṣyati ||
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
sa vilakṣas tu rājendra duryodhanapitā tadā ||
maitreyaṃ prāha kirmīraḥ kathaṃ bhīmena pātitaḥ ||
maitreya uvāca
nāhaṃ vakṣyāmy asūyā te na te śuśrūṣate sutaḥ ||
eṣa te viduraḥ sarvam ākhyāsyati gate mayi ||
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
ity evam uktvā maitreyaḥ prātiṣṭhata yathāgatam ||
kirmīravadhasaṃvigno bahir duryodhano 'gamat ||
Maitreya said: "If your son comes to peace one way or another, O king, there will be no curse; if otherwise, it will come to pass." Vaishampayana said: "Then the bewildered father of Duryodhana asked Maitreya: 'How was Kirmira felled by Bhima?' Maitreya replied: 'I will not tell it — you feel envy, and your son does not wish to listen. Vidura here will tell you everything once I have gone.' Having said this, Maitreya set out the way he had come, and Duryodhana, troubled by the slaying of Kirmira, went outside."

Even the curse leaves Duryodhana a way out: if peace comes, it will not fall. But where there is no readiness to listen, revelation closes itself off. Maitreya departs, and now the story of Kirmira must come through Vidura — through the one whose word had already been spurned.
