एवं ब्रुवति भीमं तु धर्मराजे युधिष्ठिरे ॥
आजगाम महाभागो बृहदश्वो महान् ऋषिः ॥
तम् अभिप्रेक्ष्य धर्मात्मा संप्राप्तं धर्मचारिणम् ॥
शास्त्रवन् मधुपर्केण पूजयाम् आस धर्मराट् ॥
आश्वस्तं चैनम् आसीनम् उपासीनो युधिष्ठिरः ॥
अभिप्रेक्ष्य महाबाहुः कृपणं बह्व् अभाषत ॥
अक्षद्यूतेन भगवन् धनं राज्यं च मे हृतम् ॥
आहूय निकृतिप्रज्ञैः कितवैर् अक्षकोविदैः ॥
अनक्षज्ञस्य हि सतो निकृत्या पापनिश्चयैः ॥
भार्या च मे सभां नीता प्राणेभ्यो ऽपि गरीयसी ॥
अस्ति राजा मया कश् चिद् अल्पभाग्यतरो भुवि ॥
भवता दृष्टपूर्वो वा श्रुतपूर्वो ऽपि वा भवेत् ॥
न मत्तो दुःखिततरः पुमान् अस्तीति मे मतिः ॥
evaṃ bruvati bhīmaṃ tu dharmarāje yudhiṣṭhire ||
ājagāma mahābhāgo bṛhadaśvo mahān ṛṣiḥ ||
tam abhiprekṣya dharmātmā saṃprāptaṃ dharmacāriṇam ||
śāstravan madhuparkeṇa pūjayām āsa dharmarāṭ ||
āśvastaṃ cainam āsīnam upāsīno yudhiṣṭhiraḥ ||
abhiprekṣya mahābāhuḥ kṛpaṇaṃ bahv abhāṣata ||
akṣadyūtena bhagavan dhanaṃ rājyaṃ ca me hṛtam ||
āhūya nikṛtiprajñaiḥ kitavair akṣakovidaiḥ ||
anakṣajñasya hi sato nikṛtyā pāpaniścayaiḥ ||
bhāryā ca me sabhāṃ nītā prāṇebhyo 'pi garīyasī ||
asti rājā mayā kaś cid alpabhāgyataro bhuvi ||
bhavatā dṛṣṭapūrvo vā śrutapūrvo 'pi vā bhavet ||
na matto duḥkhitataraḥ pumān astīti me matiḥ ||
While the king of righteousness was speaking thus to Bhima, the greatly blessed and mighty sage Brihadashva arrived. Seeing the righteous one who had come, the righteous-souled king of dharma honored him according to scripture with madhuparka. When the sage had rested and was seated, Yudhishthira, sitting beside him, looked upon him and spoke at length in sorrow: "Blessed one, deceivers skilled in dice, cunning gamblers, summoned me who knew nothing of dice, and through deceit and a sinful resolve took from me my wealth and my kingdom. And through deceit my wife, dearer to me than life itself, was brought into the assembly. Is there any king on earth less fortunate than I? Have you seen or even heard of one before? I think there is no man more sorrowful than I."

After answering Bhima, Yudhishthira opens his own pain to the sage. His fidelity to truth does not make him unfeeling; it simply will not let that pain become an excuse for falsehood.
