Vaishampayana said: "At that very moment a tumult arose in the sky — the sound of all the instruments of the gods, the rumble of wheels, and the ringing of bells, together with the cries of beasts and birds on every side. Gandharvas and apsaras accompanied the king of the gods, tamer of enemies, upon sun-bright celestial cars. Blazing with supreme splendor, Purandara mounted his golden chariot, yoked with hari-horses and thundering like a cloud, and swiftly came to the Pandavas. Having arrived, the thousand-eyed one descended from his chariot. Seeing the great-souled king of the gods, the noble Yudhishthira, together with his brothers, approached him and honored the boundless one according to rule, as prescribed. The radiant Dhananjaya bowed to Purandara and stood humbly beside the king of the gods like a servant. Yudhishthira, seeing Phalguna beside Indra — wearing matted locks, joined with tapas, without stain — was filled with great joy."

The scene shows that closeness to the divine does not dissolve the order of respect. Arjuna stands before Indra as a disciple and servant, and Yudhishthira sees in this not his brother's humiliation but a sign of his perfection.
