शल्य उवाच
क्रुद्धं तु नहुषं ज्ञात्वा देवाः सर्षिपुरोगमाः ॥
अब्रुवन् देवराजानं नहुषं घोरदर्शनम् ॥
देवराज जहि क्रोधं त्वयि क्रुद्धे जगद्विभो ॥
त्रस्तं सासुरगन्धर्वं सकिंनरमहोरगम् ॥
जहि क्रोधम् इमं साधो न क्रुध्यन्ति भवद्विधाः ॥
परस्य पत्नी सा देवी प्रसीदस्व सुरेश्वर ॥
निवर्तय मनः पापात् परदाराभिमर्शनात् ॥
देवराजो ऽसि भद्रं ते प्रजा धर्मेण पालय ॥
एवम् उक्तो न जग्राह तद् वचः काममोहितः ॥
अथ देवान् उवाचेदम् इन्द्रं प्रति सुराधिपः ॥

kruddhaṃ tu nahuṣaṃ jñātvā devāḥ sarṣipurogamāḥ ||
abruvan devarājānaṃ nahuṣaṃ ghoradarśanam ||
devarāja jahi krodhaṃ tvayi kruddhe jagadvibho ||
trastaṃ sāsuragandharvaṃ sakiṃnaramahoragam ||
jahi krodham imaṃ sādho na krudhyanti bhavadvidhāḥ ||
parasya patnī sā devī prasīdasva sureśvara ||
nivartaya manaḥ pāpāt paradārābhimarśanāt ||
devarājo 'si bhadraṃ te prajā dharmeṇa pālaya ||
evam ukto na jagrāha tad vacaḥ kāmamohitaḥ ||
atha devān uvācedam indraṃ prati surādhipaḥ ||
Shalya said: 'Seeing Nahusha enraged, the gods, led by the sages, addressed him -- their king of terrible countenance: "O king of gods, abandon your wrath. When you are angered, O lord, the universe -- with its asuras and gandharvas, its kinnaras and great serpents -- trembles. Abandon this anger, O righteous one. Men of your kind do not make a display of themselves. This goddess is another man's wife. Be at peace, O lord of the gods! Turn your mind away from the sin of touching another's wife. You are the king of the gods -- may all prosperity be yours! Protect your subjects in accordance with dharma." Addressed thus, he did not heed the words, for he was blinded by lust. And the king spoke to the gods, referring to Indra: "Ahalya of spotless fame, the wife of a sage, was violated by Indra while her husband still lived.'

The passage 5.12.1-5 develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort toward peace is already underway against the backdrop of an unavoidable war.
