भीतं प्रपन्नं प्रददाति शत्रवे; सेन्द्रा देवाः प्रहरन्त्य् अस्य वज्रम् ॥
एतद् एवं विजानन् वै न दास्यामि शचीम् इमाम् ॥
इन्द्राणीं विश्रुतां लोके शक्रस्य महिषीं प्रियाम् ॥
अस्या हितं भवेद् यच् च मम चापि हितं भवेत् ॥
क्रियतां तत् सुरश्रेष्ठा न हि दास्याम्य् अहं शचीम् ॥
शल्य उवाच
अथ देवास् तम् एवाहुर् गुरुम् अङ्गिरसां वरम् ॥
कथं सुनीतं तु भवेन् मन्त्रयस्व बृहस्पते ॥
बृहस्पतिर् उवाच
नहुषं याचतां देवी किं चित् कालान्तरं शुभा ॥
इन्द्राणीहितम् एतद् धि तथास्माकं भविष्यति ॥
pramīyate cāsya prajā hy akāle; sadā vivāsaṃ pitaro 'sya kurvate ||
bhītaṃ prapannaṃ pradadāti śatrave; sendrā devāḥ praharanty asya vajram ||
etad evaṃ vijānan vai na dāsyāmi śacīm imām ||
indrāṇīṃ viśrutāṃ loke śakrasya mahiṣīṃ priyām ||
asyā hitaṃ bhaved yac ca mama cāpi hitaṃ bhavet ||
kriyatāṃ tat suraśreṣṭhā na hi dāsyāmy ahaṃ śacīm ||
śalya uvāca
atha devās tam evāhur gurum aṅgirasāṃ varam ||
kathaṃ sunītaṃ tu bhaven mantrayasva bṛhaspate ||
bṛhaspatir uvāca
nahuṣaṃ yācatāṃ devī kiṃ cit kālāntaraṃ śubhā ||
indrāṇīhitam etad dhi tathāsmākaṃ bhaviṣyati ||
"His progeny die before their time, and his ancestors are forever in turmoil among themselves. The gods, with Indra at their head, hurl the thunderbolt against him. Knowing this to be so, I will never give up this Shachi, the queen of Indra, known throughout the world as his beloved consort. O best of the gods, whatever may be good both for her and for me, that I ask you to bring about. Shachi I will never give up!" Shalya continued: "Then the gods and gandharvas spoke these words to the preceptor of the gods: 'O Brihaspati, devise something in keeping with sound policy!' Brihaspati said: 'Let this fair-minded goddess ask Nahusha for some interval of time, so that she may consider his proposal.'"
