संजय उवाच
आमन्त्रये त्वा नरदेवदेव; गच्छाम्य् अहं पाण्डव स्वस्ति ते ऽस्तु ॥
कच्चिन् न वाचा वृजिनं हि किं चिद्; उच्चारितं मे मनसो ऽभिषङ्गात् ॥
जनार्दनं भीमसेनार्जुनौ च; माद्रीसुतौ सात्यकिं चेकितानम् ॥
आमन्त्र्य गच्छामि शिवं सुखं वः; सौम्येन मां पश्यत चक्षुषा नृपाः ॥
युधिष्ठिर उवाच
अनुज्ञातः संजय स्वस्ति गच्छ; न नो ऽकार्षीर् अप्रियं जातु किं चित् ॥
विद्मश् च त्वा ते च वयं च सर्वे; शुद्धात्मानं मध्यगतं सभास्थम् ॥
आप्तो दूतः संजय सुप्रियो ऽसि; कल्याणवाक् शीलवान् दृष्टिमांश् च ॥
न मुह्येस् त्वं संजय जातु मत्या; न च क्रुध्येर् उच्यमानो ऽपि तथ्यम् ॥
न मर्मगां जातु वक्तासि रूक्षां; नोपस्तुतिं कटुकां नोत शुक्ताम् ॥
धर्मारामाम् अर्थवतीम् अहिंस्राम्; एतां वाचं तव जानामि सूत ॥

āmantrya gacchāmi śivaṃ sukhaṃ vaḥ; saumyena māṃ paśyata cakṣuṣā nṛpāḥ ||
yudhiṣṭhira uvāca
anujñātaḥ saṃjaya svasti gaccha; na no 'kārṣīr apriyaṃ jātu kiṃ cit ||
vidmaś ca tvā te ca vayaṃ ca sarve; śuddhātmānaṃ madhyagataṃ sabhāstham ||
āpto dūtaḥ saṃjaya supriyo 'si; kalyāṇavāk śīlavān dṛṣṭimāṃś ca ||
na muhyes tvaṃ saṃjaya jātu matyā; na ca krudhyer ucyamāno 'pi tathyam ||
na marmagāṃ jātu vaktāsi rūkṣāṃ; nopastutiṃ kaṭukāṃ nota śuktām ||
dharmārāmām arthavatīm ahiṃsrām; etāṃ vācaṃ tava jānāmi sūta ||
Sanjaya said: 'I have taken leave of you, O divine ruler of men. Now I shall depart, O son of Pandu. May prosperity be yours. I hope I have not been carried away by the feelings of my heart and spoken anything offensive. I would also like to take leave of Janardana, Bhima and Arjuna, the son of Madri, Satyaki and Chekitana, and depart. May peace and happiness be yours. May all the kings look upon me with eyes of love.' Yudhishthira said: 'You have our leave, O Sanjaya — go. Peace be with you! O learned man, you never think ill of us. Both they and we know that you are a man of pure heart among all at the court [of the Kurus]. Moreover, now that you are our envoy, O Sanjaya, you are faithful, beloved by us, pleasant in speech, excellent in conduct, and well disposed toward us. Your mind is never clouded, and even if you are treated harshly, you never grow angry. O Suta, you never utter harsh or cutting words, nor false or bitter ones. We know that your words, free from malice, are always weighty with morality and grave meaning. Among messengers you are dearest to us. Beside you there is but one other who might come here, and that is Vidura.'
