Garuda continued: 'In ancient times Vivasvat, having performed a sacrifice, gave this quarter as a gift (Dakshina) to his teacher. And it is for this very reason that this region is known by the name Dakshina (the South). Here dwell the pitris of the three worlds. And, O brahmin, it is said that there also lives a class of gods who subsist on smoke alone. Those celestials called the Vishvedevas always dwell in this region together with the pitris. They are worshipped in sacrifices in all the worlds, and they are equal to the Pitris.'

This passage (5.109.1-5) develops the central theme of the Udyoga-parva: the effort for peace is already underway against the backdrop of an inevitable war. Key themes: Krishna. Dharma is revealed here through speech, the choice of embassy, faithfulness to promises, and the responsibility of kings for the consequences of their decisions.
