वैशंपायन उवाच
तत् तु वाक्यम् अनादृत्य सो ऽर्थवन् मातृभाषितम् ॥
पुनः प्रतस्थे संरम्भात् सकाशम् अकृतात्मनाम् ॥
ततः सभाया निर्गम्य मन्त्रयाम् आस कौरवः ॥
सौबलेन मताक्षेण राज्ञा शकुनिना सह ॥
दुर्योधनस्य कर्णस्य शकुनेः सौबलस्य च ॥
दुःशासनचतुर्थानाम् इदम् आसीद् विचेष्टितम् ॥
पुरायम् अस्मान् गृह्णाति क्षिप्रकारी जनार्दनः ॥
सहितो धृतराष्ट्रेण राज्ञा शांतनवेन च ॥
वयम् एव हृषीकेशं निगृह्णीम बलाद् इव ॥
प्रसह्य पुरुषव्याघ्रम् इन्द्रो वैरोचनिं यथा ॥
vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca
tat tu vākyam anādṛtya so 'rthavan mātṛbhāṣitam ||
punaḥ pratasthe saṃrambhāt sakāśam akṛtātmanām ||
tataḥ sabhāyā nirgamya mantrayām āsa kauravaḥ ||
saubalena matākṣeṇa rājñā śakuninā saha ||
duryodhanasya karṇasya śakuneḥ saubalasya ca ||
duḥśāsanacaturthānām idam āsīd viceṣṭitam ||
purāyam asmān gṛhṇāti kṣiprakārī janārdanaḥ ||
sahito dhṛtarāṣṭreṇa rājñā śāṃtanavena ca ||
vayam eva hṛṣīkeśaṃ nigṛhṇīma balād iva ||
prasahya puruṣavyāghram indro vairocaniṃ yathā ||
Vaishampayana said: Disregarding his mother's meaningful words, Duryodhana went again in fury to those who had no mastery over themselves. Leaving the assembly, the descendant of Kuru began to confer with King Shakuni, son of Subala, skilled in the game of dice. Such was the plan of Duryodhana, Karna, Shakuni son of Subala, and Duhshasana as the fourth: "Before this swift-acting Janardana, together with King Dhritarashtra and the son of Shantanu, seizes us, let us ourselves forcibly seize Hrishikesha, the tiger among men, as Indra once seized the son of Virochana."

Here Duryodhana's obstinacy becomes a conscious rebellion against the sound counsel of his mother and elders. His plan to seize Krishna shows how far a mind gripped by pride can go: the envoy of peace is perceived as a danger rather than as the last act of mercy before war.
