दाने तपसि शौर्ये च यस्य न प्रथितं यशः ॥
विद्यायाम् अर्थलाभे वा मातुर् उच्चार एव सः ॥
श्रुतेन तपसा वापि श्रिया वा विक्रमेण वा ॥
जनान् यो ऽभिभवत्य् अन्यान् कर्मणा हि स वै पुमान् ॥
न त्व् एव जाल्मीं कापालीं वृत्तिम् एषितुम् अर्हसि ॥
नृशंस्याम् अयशस्यां च दुःखां कापुरुषोचिताम् ॥
यम् एनम् अभिनन्देयुर् अमित्राः पुरुषं कृशम् ॥
लोकस्य समवज्ञातं निहीनाशनवाससम् ॥
अहोलाभकरं दीनम् अल्पजीवनम् अल्पकम् ॥
नेदृशं बन्धुम् आसाद्य बान्धवः सुखम् एधते ॥
dāne tapasi śaurye ca yasya na prathitaṃ yaśaḥ ||
vidyāyām arthalābhe vā mātur uccāra eva saḥ ||
śrutena tapasā vāpi śriyā vā vikrameṇa vā ||
janān yo 'bhibhavaty anyān karmaṇā hi sa vai pumān ||
na tv eva jālmīṃ kāpālīṃ vṛttim eṣitum arhasi ||
nṛśaṃsyām ayaśasyāṃ ca duḥkhāṃ kāpuruṣocitām ||
yam enam abhinandeyur amitrāḥ puruṣaṃ kṛśam ||
lokasya samavajñātaṃ nihīnāśanavāsasam ||
aholābhakaraṃ dīnam alpajīvanam alpakam ||
nedṛśaṃ bandhum āsādya bāndhavaḥ sukham edhate ||
'He whose fame is not known in giving, austerity, heroism, learning, or the gaining of wealth is nothing but his mother's refuse. He who surpasses other men in learning, austerity, wealth, valor, or deed is truly a man. You must not seek a wretched, beggarly way of life — cruel, inglorious, wretched, and fit for a coward. Enemies would rejoice at such an emaciated man, despised by the world, deprived of food and clothing, wretched, living a paltry life, giving them the joy of a find. A kinsman does not find happiness in gaining such a relative.'
