नकुलः सहदेवश् च माद्रीपुत्रौ यशस्विनौ ॥
शामित्रं तौ महावीर्यौ सम्यक् तत्र करिष्यतः ॥
कल्माषदण्डा गोविन्द विमला रथशक्तयः ॥
यूपाः समुपकल्पन्ताम् अस्मिन् यज्ञे जनार्दन ॥
कर्णिनालीकनाराचा वत्सदन्तोपबृंहणाः ॥
तोमराः सोमकलशाः पवित्राणि धनूंषि च ॥
असयो ऽत्र कपालानि पुरोडाशाः शिरांसि च ॥
हविस् तु रुधिरं कृष्ण अस्मिन् यज्ञे भविष्यति ॥
इध्माः परिधयश् चैव शक्त्यो ऽथ विमला गदाः ॥
सदस्या द्रोणशिष्याश् च कृपस्य च शरद्वतः ॥

tomarāḥ somakalaśāḥ pavitrāṇi dhanūṃṣi ca ||
asayo 'tra kapālāni puroḍāśāḥ śirāṃsi ca ||
havis tu rudhiraṃ kṛṣṇa asmin yajñe bhaviṣyati ||
idhmāḥ paridhayaś caiva śaktyo 'tha vimalā gadāḥ ||
sadasyā droṇaśiṣyāś ca kṛpasya ca śaradvataḥ ||
"Nakula and Sahadeva, the two renowned sons of Madri, these mighty brothers, will properly perform the office of shamitar there. Let the gleaming chariot-lances with mottled shafts become the sacrificial posts in this sacrifice, O Janardana. The karni, nalika, naracha, and vatsadanta arrows, the javelins, the bows serving as purifying strainers, and the vessels of soma — all this will be there. Swords will be the sacrificial bowls, heads will be the sacrificial cakes, and blood, O Krishna, will be the oblation in this sacrifice. Javelins, gleaming maces, firewood, and the ritual surrounds will be there; the disciples of Drona and of Kripa, the son of Sharadvat, will be the members of the sacrificial assembly."

Karna speaks from within a complex dharma: he acknowledges the truth Krishna has revealed, yet does not set aside his debt of gratitude to those who raised and sustained him. His image of the war as a sacrifice shows that the battle is already being lived by him as an inevitable, sacred and terrible reckoning for choices made long ago.
