Janamejaya said: "Having heard that Yudhishthira, with his army and desiring battle, had advanced and encamped on Kurukshetra under the protection of Vasudeva; that with him were Virata and Drupada with their sons, the Kekayas, the Vrishnis, and hundreds of kings; that he was guarded by great chariot-warriors as Mahendra is guarded by the Adityas — what did King Duryodhana undertake? I wish to hear this in detail, O treasury of asceticism: what took place amid that great turmoil in the land of Kurujangala? For the Pandavas, Vasudeva, Virata, and Drupada could shake even the army of the gods when they met."

The chapter shows how news of the Pandavas encamped on Kurukshetra turns Duryodhana's fear into military mobilization. He understands that Krishna will tell the Pandavas everything, yet instead of yielding he chooses to prepare for confrontation: camps, roads, weapons, troops, and a city roaring like the ocean before a storm.
