भीष्म उवाच
सुदक्षिणस् तु काम्बोजो रथ एकगुणो मतः ॥
तवार्थसिद्धिम् आकाङ्क्षन् योत्स्यते समरे परैः ॥
एतस्य रथसिंहस्य तवार्थे राजसत्तम ॥
पराक्रमं यथेन्द्रस्य द्रक्ष्यन्ति कुरवो युधि ॥
एतस्य रथवंशो हि तिग्मवेगप्रहारिणाम् ॥
काम्बोजानां महाराज शलभानाम् इवायतिः ॥
नीलो माहिष्मतीवासी नीलवर्मधरस् तव ॥
रथवंशेन शत्रूणां कदनं वै करिष्यति ॥
कृतवैरः पुरा चैव सहदेवेन पार्थिवः ॥
योत्स्यते सततं राजंस् तवार्थे कुरुसत्तम ॥

tavārthasiddhim ākāṅkṣan yotsyate samare paraiḥ ||
etasya rathasiṃhasya tavārthe rājasattama ||
parākramaṃ yathendrasya drakṣyanti kuravo yudhi ||
etasya rathavaṃśo hi tigmavegaprahāriṇām ||
kāmbojānāṃ mahārāja śalabhānām ivāyatiḥ ||
nīlo māhiṣmatīvāsī nīlavarmadharas tava ||
rathavaṃśena śatrūṇāṃ kadanaṃ vai kariṣyati ||
kṛtavairaḥ purā caiva sahadevena pārthivaḥ ||
yotsyate satataṃ rājaṃs tavārthe kurusattama ||
Bhishma said: Sudakshina, king of the Kambojas, is reckoned a ratha of a single measure of strength; wishing for the success of your cause, he will fight the enemy in battle. For your sake, O best of kings, the Kurus will witness in combat the valor of this lion among charioteers, valor equal to Indra's. His row of chariots, the warriors of Kamboja, sharp and swift in striking, O great king, will advance like a swarm of locusts. Nila, who dwells in Mahishmati and wears blue armor, will with your chariot host wreak slaughter among the enemy. This king, who once entered into enmity with Sahadeva, will fight constantly for you, O king, O best of the Kurus.

Bhishma continues not merely to praise Duryodhana's allies but to classify their fighting worth and personal motives. What matters in this roll-call are old grievances: Nila remembers Sahadeva, the Trigartas remember Arjuna, and each warrior carries into battle his own bond with the past. War thus reveals itself as the fruit of accumulated debts, rivalries, and kshatriya vows, not as a sudden burst of anger.
