विन्दानुविन्दाव् आवन्त्यौ समेतौ रथसत्तमौ ॥
कृतिनौ समरे तात दृढवीर्यपराक्रमौ ॥
एतौ तौ पुरुषव्याघ्रौ रिपुसैन्यं प्रधक्ष्यतः ॥
गदाप्रासासिनाराचैस् तोमरैश् च भुजच्युतैः ॥
युद्धाभिकामौ समरे क्रीडन्ताव् इव यूथपौ ॥
यूथमध्ये महाराज विचरन्तौ कृतान्तवत् ॥
त्रिगर्ता भ्रातरः पञ्च रथोदारा मता मम ॥
कृतवैराश् च पार्थेन विराटनगरे तदा ॥
मकरा इव राजेन्द्र समुद्धततरङ्गिणीम् ॥
गङ्गां विक्षोभयिष्यन्ति पार्थानां युधि वाहिनीम् ॥

etau tau puruṣavyāghrau ripusainyaṃ pradhakṣyataḥ ||

yūthamadhye mahārāja vicarantau kṛtāntavat ||
trigartā bhrātaraḥ pañca rathodārā matā mama ||
kṛtavairāś ca pārthena virāṭanagare tadā ||
makarā iva rājendra samuddhatataraṅgiṇīm ||
gaṅgāṃ vikṣobhayiṣyanti pārthānāṃ yudhi vāhinīm ||
Vinda and Anuvinda, the two Avantis, are together the finest of charioteers: skilled in battle, firm in strength and valor, dear one. These two tigers among men will burn the enemy host with maces, javelins, swords, naracas and tomaras hurled from their hands. Eager for battle, they will move through the fighting like two herd-leaders sporting in the midst of a herd, O great king, like death itself. The five Trigarta brothers, in my judgment, are noble charioteers; they were the ones who, in the city of Virata, entered into enmity with Partha. As makaras churn the Ganga with her rising waves, O lord of kings, so will they shake the army of the sons of Pritha in battle.

Bhishma continues not merely to praise Duryodhana's allies but to classify their fighting worth and personal motives. What matters in this roll-call are old grievances: Nila remembers Sahadeva, the Trigartas remember Arjuna, and each warrior carries into battle his own bond with the past. War thus reveals itself as the fruit of accumulated debts, rivalries, and kshatriya vows, not as a sudden burst of anger.
