ते रथाः पञ्च राजेन्द्र येषां सत्यरथो मुखम् ॥
एते योत्स्यन्ति समरे संस्मरन्तः पुरा कृतम् ॥
व्यलीकं पाण्डवेयेन भीमसेनानुजेन ह ॥
दिशो विजयता राजञ् श्वेतवाहेन भारत ॥
ते हनिष्यन्ति पार्थानां समासाद्य महारथान् ॥
वरान् वरान् महेष्वासान् क्षत्रियाणां धुरंधराः ॥
लक्ष्मणस् तव पुत्रस् तु तथा दुःशासनस्य च ॥
उभौ तौ पुरुषव्याघ्रौ संग्रामेष्व् अनिवर्तिनौ ॥
तरुणौ सुकुमारौ च राजपुत्रौ तरस्विनौ ॥
युद्धानां च विशेषज्ञौ प्रणेतारौ च सर्वशः ॥
te rathāḥ pañca rājendra yeṣāṃ satyaratho mukham ||
ete yotsyanti samare saṃsmarantaḥ purā kṛtam ||
vyalīkaṃ pāṇḍaveyena bhīmasenānujena ha ||
diśo vijayatā rājañ śvetavāhena bhārata ||
te haniṣyanti pārthānāṃ samāsādya mahārathān ||
varān varān maheṣvāsān kṣatriyāṇāṃ dhuraṃdharāḥ ||
lakṣmaṇas tava putras tu tathā duḥśāsanasya ca ||
ubhau tau puruṣavyāghrau saṃgrāmeṣv anivartinau ||
taruṇau sukumārau ca rājaputrau tarasvinau ||
yuddhānāṃ ca viśeṣajñau praṇetārau ca sarvaśaḥ ||
These five rathas, O lord of kings, led by Satyaratha, will fight in battle remembering the old injury done by the Pandava, the younger brother of Bhimasena, the White-Horsed Arjuna, when he was conquering the quarters of the world, O king, O Bharata. Coming upon the great charioteers among the sons of Pritha, these pillars of the kshatriyas will slay the best of the best, the mighty archers. Lakshmana, your son, and the son of Duhshasana — both are tigers among men, who do not turn back in battle. These two young, delicate, swift princes know well the finer points of warfare and are skilled in leadership in every respect.

Bhishma continues not merely to praise Duryodhana's allies but to classify their fighting worth and personal motives. What matters in this roll-call are old grievances: Nila remembers Sahadeva, the Trigartas remember Arjuna, and each warrior carries into battle his own bond with the past. War thus reveals itself as the fruit of accumulated debts, rivalries, and kshatriya vows, not as a sudden burst of anger.
