अन्तर्धीयत चादित्यः सैन्येन रजसावृतः ॥
ववर्ष चात्र पर्जन्यो मांसशोणितवृष्टिमान् ॥
व्युक्षन् सर्वाण्य् अनीकानि तद् अद्भुतम् इवाभवत् ॥
वायुस् ततः प्रादुरभून् नीचैः शर्करकर्षणः ॥
विनिघ्नंस् तान्य् अनीकानि विधमंश् चैव तद् रजः ॥
उभे सेने तदा राजन् युद्धाय मुदिते भृशम् ॥
कुरुक्षेत्रे स्थिते यत्ते सागरक्षुभितोपमे ॥
तयोस् तु सेनयोर् आसीद् अद्भुतः स समागमः ॥
युगान्ते समनुप्राप्ते द्वयोः सागरयोर् इव ॥
शून्यासीत् पृथिवी सर्वा बालवृद्धावशेषिता ॥
तेन सेनासमूहेन समानीतेन कौरवैः ॥

vāyus tataḥ prādurabhūn nīcaiḥ śarkarakarṣaṇaḥ ||
vinighnaṃs tāny anīkāni vidhamaṃś caiva tad rajaḥ ||
ubhe sene tadā rājan yuddhāya mudite bhṛśam ||
kurukṣetre sthite yatte sāgarakṣubhitopame ||
tayos tu senayor āsīd adbhutaḥ sa samāgamaḥ ||
yugānte samanuprāpte dvayoḥ sāgarayor iva ||
śūnyāsīt pṛthivī sarvā bālavṛddhāvaśeṣitā ||
tena senāsamūhena samānītena kauravaiḥ ||
Dust rose from the earth, and nothing at all could be discerned any longer; the sun vanished, shrouded in dust from the armies. Then a cloud poured down a rain of flesh and blood, drenching all the battle ranks, and it seemed a wonder. Then a low wind arose, dragging gravel with it; it battered the armies and scattered that dust. O king, both armies stood at Kurukshetra, intensely roused for battle, resembling a churning ocean. The meeting of the two hosts was as wondrous as the clash of two oceans at the end of an age. Because of this mass of armies gathered by the Kauravas, the whole land seemed empty, with only children and the elderly remaining in it.

The omens described here are not mere embellishment but the moral state of the world. Dust hides the sun, rain turns to blood, wind strikes with stones: nature itself responds to a war among kin. The scale of the battle is such that the earth appears stripped of its protectors and left standing only on the weak — on children and old men.
