The fourteenth, fifteenth, and sixteenth days have occurred before, but such a new moon falling on the thirteenth day I have never known. In a single month, on the thirteenth day, both the moon and the sun were eclipsed; these two eclipses, coming out of due season, will destroy the peoples. All the quarters are covered in dust, with showers of sand pouring down on every side; at night dreadful clouds of calamity rain down blood. Then, on the dark fourteenth night, at midnight there was a fierce and most dreadful rain of flesh, and the rakshasas gorged themselves there. Rivers ran against their current, their waters turned to blood; wells foamed and roared like bulls. Meteors fell with thunderous crashes, mingled with dry lightning-bolts. And today, as the night gave way to dawn, at sunrise the sun was struck by four great blazing meteors from every direction. And when these had closed in upon the solar disc, the great sages there declared: ‘The earth will drink the blood of thousands of lords of the earth.’

In these verses the very calendar breaks down: the days of the moon and sun fall out of their own order. Eclipses, rains of blood, rivers running backward, and a stricken sun all speak of a rupture in the cosmic measure. So the sages' words are no poetic figure but a verdict: the earth will drink the blood of kings.
