एतच् छ्रुत्वा भवान् अत्र प्राप्तकालं व्यवस्यताम् ॥
यथा लोकः समुच्छेदं नायं गच्छेत भारत ॥
वैशंपायन उवाच
पितुर् वचो निशम्यैतद् धृतराष्ट्रो ऽब्रवीद् इदम् ॥
दिष्टम् एतत् पुरा मन्ये भविष्यति न संशयः ॥
क्षत्रियाः क्षत्रधर्मेण वध्यन्ते यदि संयुगे ॥
वीरलोकं समासाद्य सुखं प्राप्स्यन्ति केवलम् ॥
इह कीर्तिं परे लोके दीर्घकालं महत् सुखम् ॥
प्राप्स्यन्ति पुरुषव्याघ्राः प्राणांस् त्यक्त्वा महाहवे ॥

pitur vaco niśamyaitad dhṛtarāṣṭro 'bravīd idam ||

kṣatriyāḥ kṣatradharmeṇa vadhyante yadi saṃyuge ||
vīralokaṃ samāsādya sukhaṃ prāpsyanti kevalam ||
iha kīrtiṃ pare loke dīrghakālaṃ mahat sukham ||
prāpsyanti puruṣavyāghrāḥ prāṇāṃs tyaktvā mahāhave ||
‘Having heard this, you must resolve upon what is fitting for this hour, O Bharata, so that this world may not come to utter destruction.’ Vaishampayana said: ‘Having heard these words of his father, Dhritarashtra said: “I believe this was ordained long ago; so it will be, without doubt. If kshatriyas are slain in battle according to the dharma of kshatriyas, they will attain the world of heroes and obtain nothing but happiness. Having given up their lives in the great battle, these tigers among men will win fame here, and in the other world great and lasting happiness.”’

Vyasa closes not with a further description of omens but with a call to decide: there is still time to act, so that the world need not be destroyed. Dhritarashtra's answer is tragic. He takes shelter in fate and in the glory of the kshatriya, though the omens were given precisely to awaken responsibility.
