विहगः सुमुखो यत्र सुपर्णस्यात्मजः किल ॥
स वै विचिन्तयाम् आस सौवर्णान् प्रेक्ष्य वायसान् ॥
मेरुर् उत्तममध्यानाम् अधमानां च पक्षिणाम् ॥
अविशेषकरो यस्मात् तस्माद् एनं त्यजाम्य् अहम् ॥
तम् आदित्यो ऽनुपर्येति सततं ज्योतिषां पतिः ॥
चन्द्रमाश् च सनक्षत्रो वायुश् चैव प्रदक्षिणम् ॥
स पर्वतो महाराज दिव्यपुष्पफलान्वितः ॥
भवनैर् आवृतः सर्वैर् जाम्बूनदमयैः शुभैः ॥
तत्र देवगणा राजन् गन्धर्वासुरराक्षसाः ॥
अप्सरोगणसंयुक्ताः शैले क्रीडन्ति नित्यशः ॥
तत्र ब्रह्मा च रुद्रश् च शक्रश् चापि सुरेश्वरः ॥
समेत्य विविधैर् यज्ञैर् यजन्ते ऽनेकदक्षिणैः ॥
तुम्बुरुर् नारदश् चैव विश्वावसुर् हहा हुहूः ॥
अभिगम्यामरश्रेष्ठाः स्तवै स्तुन्वन्ति चाभिभो ॥
सप्तर्षयो महात्मानः कश्यपश् च प्रजापतिः ॥
तत्र गच्छन्ति भद्रं ते सदा पर्वणि पर्वणि ॥
तस्यैव मूर्धन्य् उशनाः काव्यो दैत्यैर् महीपते ॥
तस्य हीमानि रत्नानि तस्येमे रत्नपर्वताः ॥
तस्मात् कुबेरो भगवांश् चतुर्थं भागम् अश्नुते ॥
ततः कलांशं वित्तस्य मनुष्येभ्यः प्रयच्छति ॥

bhavanair āvṛtaḥ sarvair jāmbūnadamayaiḥ śubhaiḥ ||
tatra devagaṇā rājan gandharvāsurarākṣasāḥ ||
apsarogaṇasaṃyuktāḥ śaile krīḍanti nityaśaḥ ||
tatra brahmā ca rudraś ca śakraś cāpi sureśvaraḥ ||
sametya vividhair yajñair yajante 'nekadakṣiṇaiḥ ||
tumburur nāradaś caiva viśvāvasur hahā huhūḥ ||
abhigamyāmaraśreṣṭhāḥ stavai stunvanti cābhibho ||
saptarṣayo mahātmānaḥ kaśyapaś ca prajāpatiḥ ||
tatra gacchanti bhadraṃ te sadā parvaṇi parvaṇi ||
tasyaiva mūrdhany uśanāḥ kāvyo daityair mahīpate ||
tasya hīmāni ratnāni tasyeme ratnaparvatāḥ ||
tasmāt kubero bhagavāṃś caturthaṃ bhāgam aśnute ||
tataḥ kalāṃśaṃ vittasya manuṣyebhyaḥ prayacchati ||
There, it is said, the bird Sumukha, son of Suparna, upon seeing golden crows, fell to thinking: "Meru makes no distinction between the best, the middling, and the lowest of birds; therefore I shall leave this mountain." Around it the sun, lord of the luminaries, moves constantly; the moon together with the stars, and the wind too, circle it keeping it to their right. This mountain, O great king, is endowed with divine flowers and fruits and is surrounded by beautiful dwellings all made of Jambunada gold. There on the mountain the hosts of gods, the gandharvas, asuras, and rakshasas, together with the apsaras, forever sport. There Brahma, Rudra, and Shakra, lord of the gods, gathering together, perform various sacrifices with abundant gifts. Tumburu, Narada, Vishvavasu, Haha, and Huhu, coming as the foremost of the immortals, praise it with hymns, O lord. The seven great seers and Prajapati Kashyapa, good fortune to you, always come there at every sacred season. On the very summit of this mountain, O lord of the earth, dwells Ushanas Kavya together with the daityas; to it belong these jewels and these mountains of gems. From there the blessed Kubera receives a fourth part, and then bestows a small portion of the wealth upon men.

Meru is shown as the place around which the luminaries move and where gods, sages, singers, and the lord of wealth converge. Even the episode of Sumukha underscores the world's ambiguity: outward splendor can make the worthy and the unworthy appear alike, and true discernment must therefore be inward.
