पार्श्वे तस्योत्तरे दिव्यं सर्वर्तुकुसुमं शिवम् ॥
कर्णिकारवनं रम्यं शिलाजालसमुद्गतम् ॥
तत्र साक्षात् पशुपतिर् दिव्यैर् भूतैः समावृतः ॥
उमासहायो भगवान् रमते भूतभावनः ॥
कर्णिकारमयीं मालां बिभ्रत् पादावलम्बिनीम् ॥
त्रिभिर् नेत्रैः कृतोद्द्योतस् त्रिभिः सूर्यैर् इवोदितैः ॥
तम् उग्रतपसः सिद्धाः सुव्रताः सत्यवादिनः ॥
पश्यन्ति न हि दुर्वृत्तैः शक्यो द्रष्टुं महेश्वरः ॥
तस्य शैलस्य शिखरात् क्षीरधारा नरेश्वर ॥
त्रिंशद् बाहुपरिग्राह्या भीमनिर्घातनिस्वना ॥
पुण्या पुण्यतमैर् जुष्टा गङ्गा भागीरथी शुभा ॥
पतत्य् अजस्रवेगेन ह्रदे चान्द्रमसे शुभे ॥
तया ह्य् उत्पादितः पुण्यः स ह्रदः सागरोपमः ॥
तां धारयाम् आस पुरा दुर्धरां पर्वतैर् अपि ॥
शतं वर्षसहस्राणां शिरसा वै महेश्वरः ॥

karṇikāravanaṃ ramyaṃ śilājālasamudgatam ||
tatra sākṣāt paśupatir divyair bhūtaiḥ samāvṛtaḥ ||
umāsahāyo bhagavān ramate bhūtabhāvanaḥ ||
karṇikāramayīṃ mālāṃ bibhrat pādāvalambinīm ||
tribhir netraiḥ kṛtoddyotas tribhiḥ sūryair ivoditaiḥ ||
tam ugratapasaḥ siddhāḥ suvratāḥ satyavādinaḥ ||
paśyanti na hi durvṛttaiḥ śakyo draṣṭuṃ maheśvaraḥ ||
tasya śailasya śikharāt kṣīradhārā nareśvara ||
triṃśad bāhuparigrāhyā bhīmanirghātanisvanā ||
puṇyā puṇyatamair juṣṭā gaṅgā bhāgīrathī śubhā ||
pataty ajasravegena hrade cāndramase śubhe ||
tayā hy utpāditaḥ puṇyaḥ sa hradaḥ sāgaropamaḥ ||
tāṃ dhārayām āsa purā durdharāṃ parvatair api ||
śataṃ varṣasahasrāṇāṃ śirasā vai maheśvaraḥ ||
On the northern side of this mountain lies a divine and auspicious grove of karnikara trees, beautiful, blossoming in every season, risen amid masses of stone. There Pashupati dwells directly, surrounded by divine beings; the blessed benefactor of creatures delights there together with Uma. He wears a garland of karnikara flowers hanging down to his feet, and with his three eyes he creates radiance as though three suns had risen. Him the siddhas of fierce austerity behold, those who keep pure vows and speak the truth; for it is not possible for the wicked to see Maheshvara. From the summit of this mountain, O lord of men, descends a stream of milk, thirty armspans wide and sounding with a terrible roar. The holy and beautiful Ganga Bhagirathi, frequented by the most virtuous, falls with unceasing force into a beautiful lunar lake. By this river a holy lake was brought forth, resembling the ocean. Once Maheshvara bore it upon his head for a hundred thousand years, a burden unbearable even for mountains.

The image of Ganga and Maheshvara reveals the descent of sacred power: a torrent the mountains cannot bear becomes a blessing for the world once the great Lord receives it. The verse makes clear that access to what is sacred is bound not to idle curiosity but to purity, vow, and truthfulness.
