संजय उवाच
उक्ता द्वीपा महाराज ग्रहान् मे शृणु तत्त्वतः ॥
स्वर्भानुः कौरवश्रेष्ठ यावद् एष प्रभावतः ॥
परिमण्डलो महाराज स्वर्भानुः श्रूयते ग्रहः ॥
योजनानां सहस्राणि विष्कम्भो द्वादशास्य वै ॥
परिणाहेन षट्त्रिंशद् विपुलत्वेन चानघ ॥
षष्टिम् आहुः शतान्य् अस्य बुधाः पौराणिकास् तथा ॥
चन्द्रमास् तु सहस्राणि राजन्न् एकादश स्मृतः ॥
विष्कम्भेण कुरुश्रेष्ठ त्रयस्त्रिंशत् तु मण्डलम् ॥
एकोनषष्टिर् वैपुल्याच् छीतरश्मेर् महात्मनः ॥
सूर्यस् त्व् अष्टौ सहस्राणि द्वे चान्ये कुरुनन्दन ॥
विष्कम्भेण ततो राजन् मण्डलं त्रिंशतं समम् ॥
अष्टपञ्चाशतं राजन् विपुलत्वेन चानघ ॥
श्रूयते परमोदारः पतंगो ऽसौ विभावसुः ॥
एतत् प्रमाणम् अर्कस्य निर्दिष्टम् इह भारत ॥
स राहुश् छादयत्य् एतौ यथाकालं महत्तया ॥
चन्द्रादित्यौ महाराज संक्षेपो ऽयम् उदाहृतः ॥

parimaṇḍalo mahārāja svarbhānuḥ śrūyate grahaḥ ||

pariṇāhena ṣaṭtriṃśad vipulatvena cānagha ||
ṣaṣṭim āhuḥ śatāny asya budhāḥ paurāṇikās tathā ||
candramās tu sahasrāṇi rājann ekādaśa smṛtaḥ ||
viṣkambheṇa kuruśreṣṭha trayastriṃśat tu maṇḍalam ||
ekonaṣaṣṭir vaipulyāc chītaraśmer mahātmanaḥ ||
sūryas tv aṣṭau sahasrāṇi dve cānye kurunandana ||
viṣkambheṇa tato rājan maṇḍalaṃ triṃśataṃ samam ||
aṣṭapañcāśataṃ rājan vipulatvena cānagha ||
śrūyate paramodāraḥ pataṃgo 'sau vibhāvasuḥ ||
etat pramāṇam arkasya nirdiṣṭam iha bhārata ||
sa rāhuś chādayaty etau yathākālaṃ mahattayā ||
candrādityau mahārāja saṃkṣepo 'yam udāhṛtaḥ ||
Sanjaya said: 'The dvīpas have been described, O great king; now hear from me, precisely, of the celestial bodies. O best of the Kauravas, Svarbhanu, as great as he is in power, is reckoned a round celestial body. Its diameter, O great king, is twelve thousand yojanas; in circumference, thirty-six; and in magnitude, O sinless one, the sages and Purana-scholars declare it sixty hundred. The moon, O king, is reckoned eleven thousand in diameter; its circle, O best of the Kurus, is thirty-three, and the extent of the great cool-rayed luminary is fifty-nine. The sun, O joy of the Kurus, has eight thousand and two thousand more in diameter; its disk, O king, is exactly thirty, and in magnitude, O sinless one, this supremely noble radiant body is reckoned fifty-eight. Such, O Bharata, is the measure given here of the sun. This Rahu, at the proper time, by his immensity covers both luminaries — the moon and the sun, O great king. Such is the brief account.'

After the terrestrial and celestial regions, Sanjaya turns to the heavenly bodies. Even an eclipse is explained not as chance but as the timely action of Rahu, preserving the chapter's governing principle: everything in the world has its measure, its place, and its appointed motion.
